Pyramid Head from "Silent Hill".

Original pencils by: :iconstalk: [link]

I'm not one to try and put colours on pencils. I usually find the finished product a little rough for my taste but I love this character and I think Daniel did an excellent job. I couldn't resist! As a bonus, I think roughness really works for this image as well.

This is some really solid coloring. I like how you dropped out the linework and your choice to keep the palette limited really adds to the grunginess of P-Head's world. The textures on the mist and background really cement him in the shot instead of him just floating in space like in my original pencils.

I'm not too sure about that stark black fading to gray shadow you have running along the base of his mask. Part of my loves that it creates this crisp definition between the head and torso. The other part of my wants to process it as a weak gradient that sticks out against all the groovy tonal and textural work you've got everywhere else.

Of course if digital coloring skillz were sea-life mine would be plankton to your Blue Whale so it may just be a stylistic choice that's over my head especially after taking a browse through your very nifty gallery.

Awesome job, Cliff! Thanks for making my chicken-scratches shine and if you ever feel inclined to slap some more color on any of my pieces please do!

Wow, thanks for the really detailed comment! I definitely appreciate all your feedback.

I'll just address a couple of things: first off, you're totally right about the helmet gradients. When I first flatted and started rendering it, all the colours were a lot stronger. Since you've peeked at my gallery, I'm sure you've noticed that I tend to use a lot of vibrant colours. The strong contrast between light and dark worked well at first. But then as the piece developed, I muted the overall tones a lot more to give it a darker/grungier kind of feel. I never changed the contrast of the helmet gradients and I should have. Thanks for your honesty. I'll definitely be fixing that up.

To be honest, I was a little worried about rendering out some of you line work. Especially near the feet with all of the mist. I don't really like to do that normally because I want the line artist to have the spotlight and just have the colours act as support. But as I experimented a little bit, my girlfriend looked over my should and commented on how she really liked where it was going so I went with it. Sometimes you need an outside eye to make those kinds of judgments. I really liked the effect and I was happy to read that you liked it too.

So, with that said, I'd just like to thank you again for checking it out and supporting what I did. I've checked out your gallery as well and there's DEFINITELY more I'd like to tackle!

Oh, by the way, if penciling/inking were automobiles, yours would be a Ferrari to my rusted-out, old Edsel with a missing wheel. lol I have never been able to draw very well so I really appreciate the talents of people such as yourself.

Thank you very much!

My approach to the artwork I do is that anyone else who works on it be it an inker or colorist should bring their own voice to the piece. Working in tandem we should produce a piece of art that surpasses what each of us can do individually and it's tough to find others who can sync up with each other to produce such work.

I like people that work on my pencils to do their own thing and enhance the work because in the end it makes me look good! ;P Without a great inker or colorist I'm just a goofball with a pencil and some small modicum of skill.

I like the way your girlfriend thinks and I'm glad she pushed you to follow your instincts. Of course I'm one of the easiest guys you'll find to work with, easy like Sunday morning as the song says. Others may be a bit more touchy about their work but as long as you're not smearing it with crap or totally changing it beyond it's original source the colors should be your own since in that media you are much more the professional than I am.

You don't know how many times I've given my stuff to inkers and colorist expecting great things (and I've been colored by guys over at Marvel and such) and they just totally cheese it because they choose to play it safe and color by the standard rather than trying something new and making the work shine.

To make a long story short keep playing around with stuff, don't be afraid to take some chances unless it's not called for by an editor or art director and you'll keep doing some really great work.
